GOTHARC Story

About

Gotharc is an art studio based in south west London, UK.

It is a place where creativity by use of different media takes place. Inspiration evolving from everyday life subjects, or past memories, or often, by expressing the subconscious through an automatic drawing process, figures or object appear on paper or canvas surprising the artist herself/himself.

Figurative art, still paintings, cityscapes or landscapes, by using mixed media or oil pastels with charcoal on paper and card, or acrylic as a painting medium on canvases, with line, colour and backgrounds merging to express a mood, a setting or a simple painting experience.
Exploring different subject matter, from portraiture, figure drawing and painting, interiors, nature and abstracts, often applying an autonomic creating process and achieving imagery that is often surprising the artist.

Our creative vision has always being connected with exploring ideas of using reclaimed or recycled materials whenever possible when creating objets d’art.
Attempting to create a new design piece with materials that have had a life story has been both a motivating factor and a challenge to the artist.
Inspired by nature and interesting characters and scenery, we carve distinctive lines and depth on the wood to produce the image, then carefully use wood finishes that enhance the natural beauty and grain of the wood.

In the past, Gotharc had exposure in upmarket Fulham area in London, and also their art pieces were sold in Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge, London, UK.

Artist statement - Suzana Sterland

Artistic enquiry embodies a large body of work.. Enquiry into the human existence, nature,  emotions, gestures and expressions.

By using the visual language through exaggerated movement in painting an drawing, and focusing on beauty through line or colour rather than realistic expectations of the subject painted in order to bring the unexpected. The process of applying layers of different materials used, an imaginary sense of movement is created and new visual language added to the work.

By working with wood in its natural form and transforming it through skilled craftsmanship and varied carving techniques, a spontaneous decision-making process emerges during creation. Unexpected forms often arise, guided by both the inherent beauty and the unique challenges of the material. The wood's strength, natural coloration, and dynamic structure present obstacles—but also deep satisfaction—throughout the creative journey.

The choice of subject matter—whether organically inspired or more geometric in form—is a deliberate and time-intensive process. The resulting objects are aesthetically grounded and closely connected to nature: earthy, tactile, and often symbiotic in their visual expression.
